Mario Kart 8 Deluxe takes the cast of Mario Kart 8, but adds 5 new characters. There are classics, mostly from Mario license games, as well as a few guests like Link from The Legend of Zelda, Marie and the Villagers from Animal Crossing and the Inklings from Splatoon.

Breakdown by weight
The choice of a character is not only aesthetic. Characters are split into multiple weight classes, each with different stats. It's up to you to pick a character that suits your needs. Light characters are generally more maneuverable, but have a reduced top speed. They are also easily knocked down by characters heavier than them. Conversely, heavy characters go faster, but have much lower acceleration time and maneuverability.
