While Nathan Drake's career came to a peaceful end in 2016, deciding to devote himself to his family life, the Uncharted series had a slight boost the following year with the episode The Lost Legacy. Originally developed to be a simple solo DLC, this adventure with Chloé Frazer and Nadine Ross finally turned into a more ambitious stand-alone spin-off, thanks to its slightly less directive structure via more open play areas. 2016 and 2017 were like yesterday, and already at the time, these two titles were already considered benchmarks in terms of visual rendering, knowing that they were released on aging and quite limited hardware. Naughty Dog masters its tools and The Last of Us Part 2 released 3 years later proved it to us once again. Inevitably, when Sony Interactive Entertainment announced at the start of the 2021 school year that the two games were going to return in a remastered version on PS5, it was difficult not to be excited to find them with the performances offered with the PS5.
"CHOOSE YOUR DESTINY"
Like the latest PlayStation Studios productions, the Uncharted Collection compilation arrives with its 3 proposals: the "Fidelity" mode which allows you to play in a native 4K resolution, but with a frame-rate blocked at 30fps. In "Performance" mode, you can cheat a little and enjoy an upscaled 4K display and benefit from the sacrosanct 60fps. And finally, the "Performance Plus" mode offers happiness pushing the frame-rate to 120fps if you ever have a television compatible with the 120hz standard, which is obviously not given to everyone, the models being still rare on the market. On the other hand, the resolution will be blocked at 1080p, which in 2022 is starting to be limit-limit. If we were unable to test the "Performance Plus" mode, due to a lack of compatible hardware, we did not hesitate to switch between the "Fidelity" and "Performance" modes to try to find out which one is right. comes out the best. Quite honestly, unless your name is PP Garcia and you spend your time testing the technical specifics of TVs all day long, it's hard to see a big difference between the native 4K version and the one upscaled from a 1440p source. . It is perhaps a little more visible when you land to contemplate certain panoramas in detail, but in the heat of the action, you only see fire. This is why we strongly advise you to choose the Performance mode which offers real added value, that of offering a frame-rate of 60 frames per second. This is all the more true since the latter turns out to be really stable and fairly constant, have we just noticed a few slight drops during the big action scenes, and again, all of this remains very minimal.
What about the additions offered with the DualSense, supposed to immerse us even more in the adventure? Here too, it is difficult to see a real argument for purchase as we have rarely been captivated by the proposal. As much as the adaptive triggers manage to give better sensations during gunfights and moments of puzzles, as much as the haptic feedback is singularly lacking in conviction. Probably because the game was not designed with these basic options and these additions do not seem to have been a priority in the development process. As for 3D audio, it's also difficult to give an opinion when you've been playing with 5.1 material for a long time, and overall, since the arrival of this technical gimmick, we've never really been captivated by the proposal. It must however be recognized that by switching to PS5, Uncharted Legacy of Thieves Collection benefits from considerably reduced loading times, which avoids breaks between transitions and that, nevertheless, is a little more not unpleasant.
In any case, it's hard to be truly satisfied with this remaster, which comes much too soon, and which struggles to breathe new life into two games that were already artistically and technically very successful.
REMASTER QUICKLY
In any case, it's hard to be truly satisfied with this remaster, which comes much too soon, and which struggles to breathe new life into two games that were already artistically and technically very successful. Even today, Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy are jewels to contemplate, which proves that Naughty Dog was a few years ahead in terms of design production. Both games are still visually stunning and it was not uncommon for us to take the time to stop playing to contemplate the smallest details in the scenery, or in the character animations. Like Rockstar Games, the Naughty Dog studio is a fan of these little details that make the difference and it's still so pleasant to look for them six years later. So of course, if you haven't yet had the opportunity to browse these two popcorn action game classics, we can only advise you to opt for these remasters. On the other hand, if you already have the games on PS4, there is no need to upgrade, the differences being far too slight to add the 10€ requested by Jim Ryan, the big boss of Sony Interactive Entertainment. You have been warned.
