There are many, many ways to unlock all the characters in Smash Bros Ultimate, but there's one method to get them all in just an hour and a half.

With over 70 characters to unlock, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate enough to keep you guessing for quite a long time. However, you may only be interested in a handful of them, or simply want to unlock them all as soon as possible so that you can get started online or against friends without further delay.

At the start of the game, you will only be able to play the 8 original characters from the very first Smash Bros (Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Kirby, Yoshi, Fox, Pikachu). All other characters are unlockable. The Adventure mode is more particular, since you will only be able to play it Kirby at first. 

There are multiple ways to unlock each of Smash Ultimate's characters, some faster than others. All these methods are compatible with each other, which makes it possible to obtain new fighters naturally and quickly when using the game normally. We are going to detail each of these ways. Be aware that not all characters can be unlocked with each of these methods.

We have prepared a summary table to unlock each character, after these explanations. You will also find the fastest way to unlock them all in less than 2 hours at the end of this guide.

Unlock with Game Time

When playing Smash Bros. Ultimate, the game's internet clock counts the time you spend playing. The game is designed to offer you a new character every 10 minutes. Every ten minutes of play, when you leave your current game mode to return to the main menu, you will then be entitled to the screen "a new enemy is approaching!". You will then have to fight this new character and you will unlock him if you manage to beat him. If unsuccessful, you can go to the Vault and retry the fight by tapping the flashing icon at the bottom right of the screen.

Unlock in Classic Mode

Most of the time, finishing the Classic mode with one of the characters unlocks another one. Some characters will require you to complete Classic mode with several other characters to be unlocked. The same character can unlock several other characters by completing their Classic mode several times. When you know exactly which character you want to unlock, this is probably the easiest way to get the character you want.

Unlock in Adventure Mode

The Adventure mode and its solo campaign "The Light of the World" offers several hundred confrontations, some of which allow you to unlock characters regularly. This is generally the slowest method of all, except for certain characters found very early in the adventure.

Fastest way to unlock characters

Update: Following patch 1.2, this method no longer works. If you opted for the physical version of the game and you have not yet started your game, you can disconnect your console from the internet to prevent the update, the time to unlock all the characters. If you have already updated the game, you can delete the data (you will also lose your save!) and start the game offline. You can then follow the following method:

To quickly unlock all characters, there is a method that takes advantage of the game time mechanic. As explained above, you unlock a character every 10 minutes. However, the game has trouble counting the game time and hours when you change the game language. So just change the game language after obtaining a character to reset the delay until the next character.

To change the language, just go to options and then to language settings. Put another language (preferably one you know so you don't get lost in the menu) and validate. This operation restarts the game. You can then unlock another character immediately.

Concretely, the procedure is as follows:

- Match versus in Stock mode with only 1 stock against the AI
- Kill yourself to end the match
- Fight the new unlockable character
- Go to options and change language.
- Repeat the operation until you get all the characters you want

By repeating this technique, you will unlock all the characters in about an hour and a half.

If by any chance you lose your fight against the unlockable character, don't worry, you can rematch him after changing the language again. He will be waiting for you in the Extras menu, behind the red door at the bottom right of the menu.
