It's no longer a surprise, with each generation of Pokémon games, players are entitled to a third version of the title some time after. A good way for Nintendo to seduce the latest laggards while extending the adventure of the most fervent Pokémon fans a little more. However, if you were expecting to discover an "unpublished" adventure, like what was done with Pokémon Black and White 2, you may be disappointed. Indeed, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon arrive with the desire to offer a more extensive experience to players without distorting the basic content of Pokémon Sun and Moon.
AN ULTRA SCENARIO?
In addition to the possibility of capturing Pokémon (from previous generations) that were not present last year, players will still be able to discover some novelties in the scenario with the arrival of the Ultra-Commando, two antagonists who come to Earth in order to remedy the problem of the Necrozma. If this new narrative arc makes it possible to fully exploit the Ultra-Breach introduced with Pokémon Sun and Moon, it above all allows Necrozma to take a more important place in the story, although Solgaleo and Lunala remain at the center of the story. In terms of the scenario, players will also be delighted to find Team "Rainbow" Rocket, which brings together the greatest villains in Pokémon history. Thus, in this new opus, you will be able to put a beating to several cult characters of the saga such as Lysandre, Ghétis, Max or Giovanni, the latter being accompanied by Mewto. As you can see, Game Freak has not skimped on the means but, however, you will not live a radically different adventure if you have already played Pokémon Sun and Moon. The new narrative arcs develop after many hours of play and the first steps on Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon may seem daunting for some players. On the other hand, those who did not discover this generation last year can have a great time, with Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, they will get their money's worth.
CATCH THEM ALL... OR ALMOST!
If players will be able to discover some new story arcs in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Game Freak has also thought of players suffering from acute collecting since in these new opuses, it is possible to capture around 400 Pokémon (evolutions included) from old generations. Of the 800 and some Pokémon introduced via previous episodes of the saga, it is true that the number is a bit feeble, but it is difficult to complain. Our adventure becomes less redundant and the possibility of crossing Pokémon absent from the Moon and Sun versions adds a real plus to the adventure. For those who do not wish to capture already known Pokémon, know that four new Ultra Chimeras (Vémini, Mandrillon, Ama-Ama and Pierroteknik) are appearing in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. If we appreciate the fact of being able to capture new monsters, we remain skeptical about their design, the latter being much less stylish than the previous Ultra Chimeras. Another important point, it is now possible to obtain dominant Pokémon, from Professor Chen, by exchanging badges which are scattered across the islands of Alola. If the quest is not the most exciting, it has the merit of extending the life of the game and treasure hunt enthusiasts can have fun.
On the content side, the developers have not skimped by adding many side quests as well as new places and activities. Like the Démanta surf, which allows you to use Démanta as a Poke-mount to move between two islands, while performing crazy tricks on the waves. A fairly nice novelty but which will not fascinate players for long. Indeed, if we appreciate being able to buy special objects thanks to the points obtained after a super surf run, the mini game remains quite redundant and after a few tries, the players should quickly drop this aspect of the game. More interesting, the possibility of exploring Ultra Breaches, thanks to Solgaleo and Lunala, in order to access alternate dimensions where it is possible to capture legendary Pokémon. If the mini-game related to Ultra-Breaches is largely dispensable, it is a pleasure to be able to go hunting for legendaries, while discovering historical places of the saga. In addition, the Ultra-Brèches will make you discover Ultra-Megapolis, a magnificent city that has lived without light since the passage of Necrozma and which will play a central role in the adventures of our hero.
ADDITIONS TOO MINIMAL
In terms of combat, Game Freak has also tried to bring some new blood by adding new Z crystals and new signature Z abilities. What's more, the Z bracelet gives way to the Super Z bracelet, which allows you to use abilities exclusive to certain Pokémon. If in itself this does not change much to the adventure, we appreciate the fact of seeing exclusive attacks arrive and this makes it possible to revive a little the interest of hunting monsters. Similarly, if you have already played Pokémon Sun or Moon, you will be delighted to learn that some events have been slightly modified, while Captain Oléa has a new event. Again, this does not radically change the adventure but these small transformations have the merit of renewing the experience somewhat. Finally, photography enthusiasts will be able to enjoy themselves thanks to the Alola photo club. Here, you can take a picture with your favorite pokemon and you can customize your shots using many customization options. Once again, it does not break three legs to a duck, even if some players will find their account. A real photo mode like Pokémon Snap (and not the photos of the Rotom-Dex), with various lenses, would have been more appreciable but it will be necessary to be satisfied with a photo booth all that is more classic.
