The Game Awards was an opportunity for Nintendo to present the first character that will join Smash Ultimate in the form of paid DLC.
Reggie had teased an announcement regarding Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at the Game Awards, and since the game was coming out in the process and the season pass was going to be marketed, it was not difficult to imagine that we would be presented with a first character in DLC in order to motivate the purchase. And so we had this famous character!
It is therefore Joker, the hero of 5 person which will open the DLC ball. At this time, we have no idea what the in-game character will look like, as development hasn't started yet. It should probably be released after February. The release of the character will be accompanied by an internship and musical tracks.
This choice is not particularly surprising, the Persona series being particularly popular and loved by Masahiro Sakurai, himself. The creator of Smash Bros has often spoken of his affection for Persona 5 and he was even inspired by it to create the menus of Smash Ultimate.
